Where a sandwichbecomes art.
Classic French technique. A surfer's soul. Family-run restaurant. Every plate a blank canvas, painted by Chef Kris Bateman in the heart of storybook Edenton.
A curated selection.
We take simple things — sandwiches and salads — and use creative techniques to make them special and unexpected. Here are three of the signatures that put Downtown Roots on the map.

Cupola
Turkey, bacon, swiss, dijonnaise, avocado, and slaw. A balanced stack with creamy, tangy, and crunchy in every bite.

Italian Stallion
Ham, salami, pepperoni, provolone, tomato, red onion, dressed lettuce, and herb mayo. A deli-style Italian stacked with bold, briny flavor.

Strawberry Beet Salad
Arugula, strawberries, roasted beets, goat cheese, candy pecans, balsamic glaze, and fennel vinaigrette. Sweet, earthy, and bright in every bite.
The menu changes with the seasons. Curiosity is encouraged.

An artist who chose the kitchen.
Before he cooked, Kris Bateman painted. He pictured himself running a high-end French place. COVID changed the plan, but not the craft — he still uses classic French technique, just on sandwiches and salads, for people who might never try them otherwise.
To him, every dish is a mix of three things: flavor, texture, and temperature. Getting all three just right is an art.
